April 21st: Call a Distant Friend

I think I have talked about this before, but today I revisit it. I have, by choice, moved around quite a bit. This makes for an exciting life, and I love living in and exploring new places. But the down side is my closest friends and the great friends I make along the way, I often lose contact with or don’t talk to as often as I would like.

So today I made an effort to call a friend I have not talked to in a while.

It was so refreshing! I miss my friends, especially my best ones. It reminded me how great it is to  talk to people that know me and have known me through ups and downs, tragedies and triumphs, and know what I stand for and where I come from without question.

April 5th: FaceTime with Someone

I have never really gotten into FaceTime like other people have. But to be honest, I am not really too big in phone calls either. It is not that I do not enjoy talking to people, especially people that do not live near me, which is a lot of my friends and family since I have moved around quite a bit, but still, I just do not do it that often.

Regardless, I want to make myself do this and maybe force myself to do it more often because it really does connect you with people on a different level than just a text or an email or even a phone call.

So I had a brief FaceTime session and it really was fun.

I will recall Christmas this past year. My brother and I were the only two to spend the holiday with my parents. Mind you, I have three other sisters, who each are married and have 3, 3, and 2 children… so 8 in all. We all sat around our iPads at one point and connected via video on Facebook.  It really was a nice way to be together even when we were not together.

This was a great photo from the session!

As with most of these things on my list for the year… I need to remind myself to do this more often. I will usually put it off or think I will not enjoy it but when it comes down to it and I do it… I always love it. This list will be a nice thing to look back on. I will be able to tell myself, “remember when you did this… it was great for you!”

March 2nd: List Ten Things I am Grateful For

1. My parents and siblings. They are supportive and loving even if I do not see them for a long time.

2. My dog. It truly is like having an extra best friend!

3. The ability to work for my dreams. Particularly, pursuing my artistic endeavors. Some people never have the chance in their life to actually do what they love. I am still working hard to make it my only career, and hope and think one day it will be.

4. My friends. Growing up I always had a lot of friends and through my early twenties I always felt it was important to surround myself with lots of people. I am moving away from that as I realize how importang it is to have people in my life that truly care and matter to me. So I am truly happy to my close friends that are always there, and I will always be there for.

5. My education. I might be paying hundreds of dollars a month to get my student loan paid off, but I am still grateful I had the opportunity to get an education, and more importantly the one I wanted to get.

6. The state of Colorado. I moved around a few times and always got this itch to leave places after a while, but I have been in Colorafo for over five years now and feel home. I love the weather. I love the city. I love the sports to see and to play. I just love it.

7. My health. I battled cancer a few years ago and am so thankful and blessed to be out on the other side healthy.

8. The great outdoors. Between National Parks, city parks, and everything in between how could you not be grateful for the great outdoors. I love to hike, camp, explore historic places… etc.

9. Sleep. Of course this is something we all take for granted, but a good sleep is key to a happy heart and life. I do not sleep well often because of random arm pain but when I do it is the best thing to happen to me all week!

10. Physical health. Particularly, the ability to run in races, go swimming, go hiking, work at a bar and move quickly, the list could go on with all the physically challenging things I am capable of and for that I am grateful.

February 10th: Text 5 Long Distance Friends

I have moved a few times. New York City, Key West, my hometown, and now Denver I have connected with people differently and vastly.

I am pretty bad about staying in touch. Even though I miss my friends in distant places I rarely reach out to them or talk to them because life just gets in the way.

I often think how ridiculous this is. I need to make more of an effort. So this afternoon I texted five friends that I have not talked to in a while. Hopefully it will inspire a little bit of ongoing communication.

I found this article somewhat about this topic.
