March 26th: Apply for a Job That Seems Out of Reach

So far this year I have done some great things! A few of them get me closer to completing other tasks. For example, earlier this year I updated my resume.

So toady, that makes it a little easier for me to apply for a new job that seems out of reach.
I am not necessarily looking for a new job but I do believe it is always good to keep options open. Plus, it is always good practice to apply for jobs to keep those skills alive.

So I happened to come across a job listing for a Marketing Coordinator for a brewery in Colorado. For the most part, the job description is what I do now, minus bartending 40 hours a week… so it could not hurt to try. And it is pretty much what I dream about doing. How can I not go for this?!?

And just so you all know, I did not win the lottery a few weeks ago when I bought a ticket… 😂

March 24th: Clean the Bedroom Closet

So Spring is here and it only seems appropriate to start some Spring Cleaning.

I thought cleaning out the closet was going to be really difficult but after some of my purging efforts that  as part of my other things for the year I had a lot less clutter than expected.

The closet is still full… because I still have way too much stuff. But it is cleaned and more organized, so there is definitely a nice sense of relief.

March 20th: Take a Day Off Work Just Because

Will someone remind me to do this once a week?!? 😂

And next time I will follow these steps: How to Really Take a Day Off. Written by Courtney Carver

The 10 step plan to really take a day off
Schedule your day off. Put it in your calender and make it important.

Tell the world. Call your friends, text your colleagues, tweet the news that you have scheduled a day off and won’t be available.

Take a Sabbath eve. On the night before your planned day off, skip the heavy meal and alcohol. Plan to wake up feeling peaceful and refreshed.

Make a Sabbath box. This was a lovely suggestion from the book, Sabbath. Put anything in the box that you don’t want to use during your day off. I think cell phone, and computer will top the list, but there may be other things. Also include things left undone, and worries by writing them on a piece of paper and placing it in the box.

Time out. Whenever I go on vacation, the thing I love most is not being aware of what time it is and not caring. If you can afford this luxury, turn off your clocks and don’t worry about what time it is. Eat when you’re hungry, drink when you’re thirsty and sleep when you’re tired.

Leave the “shoulds” in the Sabbath box. If you are really going to take a day off, don’t worry about what you should or should not be doing. If you want to take three naps, take three naps. Lunch in bed? Why not?

Rest in your own way.

Renew in your own way.

Delight in your own way.

Promise you won’t spend the day after making up for your  day off.

I hope others can find this day off schedule useful, but all I can say is either way, having a day that is about nothing but not working is rather fantastic… we should all be doing it.

March 19th: Explore Google Earth

I am sure many of you out there have explored cities and monuments with Google Earth. I evidently am behind the times. But working now to catch up. 😂

If you have not explored with it, I suggest it. I just spent a few hours exploring lots of places and just got enthralled with it.

Also it seems like a good resource you could use if you were traveling somewhere. You could learn the layout of cities and help you get around! Or if you do not have the resources or ability to travel, it is a pretty cool way to see things in a more 3-Dimensional way than just looking at photographs.

March 18th: Try a New Kind of Cereal

I have never been a huge breakfast person. My lifestyle as a bartender has often catered to morning being aroun 11, so breaskfast often seems to pass me by. Of course I love the occasional brunch or fancy breakfast but know how important eating breakfast can be.

So trying a a new cereal can have more benefits than just the simple task of trying something new.

How important is breakfast? I found some interesting reads:

Why breakfast is so important-
The Many Benefits of Breakfast
Overall these simple things are something that overtime can improve life or how one feels day to day.

I am so excited spring is here! There are so many fun things coming up on my list!

March 14th: Learn to Read Music

I found this great site that really walks you through, step by step of how to read music. But phew.

How to Read Sheet Music
I find this interesting and will continue to explore it but even after reading it I do not think I have any idea how to actually read music.

I am in no way musically inclined… I have always lived more of an athletic life. So maybe this thing is a miss.

At least I tried… 🎼

March 11th: Discover a New Artist

Well, I have slightly fallen behind on my blog posting… so just trying to catch up.

One thing I added to the list for a very specific purpose was Discover a New Artist. This can mean so many things to different people… discover new music, new paintings, new famous works… but for me it is about discovering new local, small business artists that are trying to make a life from their art.

I have had various jobs in the art world. I have a degree in Photography and in Arts Management but far too often it falls by the wayside and I concentrate too much of my life on making money than making art. I am positive many artists fall victim to this and that is why I find it so important to support artists.

Anyway, enough of the rant… I have discussed this before, particularly with my post earlier in the year when I answered questions that will free your mind. Because as awesome as that list of questions was and truly did open up my mind, it also showed me how I close myself off to things that I truly want. But there I go again, continuing the rant…

So let me just get to the point at hand- discovering a new artist.

I found this local photographer, Wilsonapxe Photography. I am stunned by the night images and just blown away by the colors.

Interestingly I just stumbled upon this photography but when I got into the page I discovered that Westword Magazine just named the photographer one of the top “instagrammers” in Denver. Now I have to follow! Maybe you should too… Instagram handle, @wilsonaxpe !

March 9th: Lay Down and Listen to Music

This is quite possibly one of the most relaxing things I could have done for myself. It is almost meditative. As with almost everything else on my list, I almost always say, I should do this more often! And I should. I need more me time, time to just relax, stop thinking, and just breathe.

As I get deeper and deeper into the year I realize that this list is going to be hard to keep up with but I think if I keep at it my life will be better for it.

March 6th: Listen to Jazz

So this should be a daily habit now that I have a record player… but I just do not have enough good stuff. I have spent the last hour or so doing some graphic work and marketing stuff… and have just been walking to the living room to flip my Miles Davis record over, again and again.

There is something relaxing about jazz, even in the moments when things are heightened and almost edgy. There still seems to be a sense of relaxation from song to song. Anyway, here is my task for the day: Listen to Jazz and that is what I am doing… and probably will be doing for the next few hours before I hit the pillow and get some zzz’s.

I am still in my 30 days of purging items and I would say it is going rather well. I keep getting to different areas of my room, or closet, or kitchen space… and kind of just throwing everything away. It feels good to minimalize.

Bonus for today: I decided to grab two bags out of my closet, see what was in them, and throw out what I could. I only ended up throwing away one old box of unused black and white photographic paper… I am pretty sure by now it has become exposed and would not print anything anyway. But I found multiple boxes of my old darkroom prints from college. I did not go through them yet, but I will, and am excited to see what is in there. I will probably throw a bunch away. But maybe I will put others up on my Facebook or Instagram and try to sell them! I think there is some good stuff in there!

March 2nd: List Ten Things I am Grateful For

1. My parents and siblings. They are supportive and loving even if I do not see them for a long time.

2. My dog. It truly is like having an extra best friend!

3. The ability to work for my dreams. Particularly, pursuing my artistic endeavors. Some people never have the chance in their life to actually do what they love. I am still working hard to make it my only career, and hope and think one day it will be.

4. My friends. Growing up I always had a lot of friends and through my early twenties I always felt it was important to surround myself with lots of people. I am moving away from that as I realize how importang it is to have people in my life that truly care and matter to me. So I am truly happy to my close friends that are always there, and I will always be there for.

5. My education. I might be paying hundreds of dollars a month to get my student loan paid off, but I am still grateful I had the opportunity to get an education, and more importantly the one I wanted to get.

6. The state of Colorado. I moved around a few times and always got this itch to leave places after a while, but I have been in Colorafo for over five years now and feel home. I love the weather. I love the city. I love the sports to see and to play. I just love it.

7. My health. I battled cancer a few years ago and am so thankful and blessed to be out on the other side healthy.

8. The great outdoors. Between National Parks, city parks, and everything in between how could you not be grateful for the great outdoors. I love to hike, camp, explore historic places… etc.

9. Sleep. Of course this is something we all take for granted, but a good sleep is key to a happy heart and life. I do not sleep well often because of random arm pain but when I do it is the best thing to happen to me all week!

10. Physical health. Particularly, the ability to run in races, go swimming, go hiking, work at a bar and move quickly, the list could go on with all the physically challenging things I am capable of and for that I am grateful.

February 17th: Explore NASA Archives

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This was so awesome. I got lost in this website for quite a while.

Here are some of my favorite images.

The only thing that surprised me is that some images are “artist renderings” or “artist creations” and not just factual or direct representations of things. I would think NASA would be a little more scientific. Still, the images were really cool to look at… and I migh have learned a little about stars, galaxies, and black holes.

You should check out the site too!

February 16th: Update Resume

Well, I did not think it had been that long but when I went to update my resume today I did not even have my current place of employment on there… and I have been at the place for over THREE YEARS! But I did it. I updated it.

It was slightly disheartening because my second page includes art exhibitions I have been in and charity work I have done and I had NOTHING to add to those. So I think a goal should be to work on those things to add, because those are my life and should be the most important things I am working on.

If anyone has suggestions on things to change, edit, or add I would greatly appreciate feedback.

So there it is. As many of my other tasks I have been working on throughout the last month and a half, this might help get some of my other tasks down the road done. Always good to keep things updated and keep things rolling.
